I greatly enjoyed my visits to school Parostok and hope to come back many times.
I was very impressed by the students, who are not only working hard to learn English, but are also, at the same time, using English to think deeply about extremely important topics. When I heard the advanced students debating about what makes someone happy, and about what democracy means, my heart was full of warmth. Ukraine — and the world — need future leaders who can communicate well and respectfully, and who can make reasoned, thoughtful arguments about these philosophical topics. I sometimes feel like our world is headed in a bad direction, with climate change, racism, ugly politics…but these kids give me hope for the future!
The younger children are working so hard and learning so much. I found them to be very open and communicative — I think they will go far and learn a lot! The 5-year-olds know so much already after just starting school!
And one more thing: I am very impressed by these students’ teacher and her modern, up-to-date, empathetic pedagogy. I think Larissa should train future teachers! The methodology and plan of the school are also just wonderful to see. I wish all schools could operate along these principles. Students learn so much—not only in their subject areas, but about being good communicators, deep thinkers, and empathetic people, from this kind of teaching.
